Foundation

Physics exam required before credentials are awarded

  • Sonography Principles and InstrumentationSPISPI is the first step for RDMS, RDCS, RVT, and RMSKS and can be paired in either order with specialty exams.

Diagnostic Imaging

RDMS credential pathways for diagnostic specialties

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical SonographerRDMSPair SPI with AB, BR, FE, OB/GYN, or PS within five years.

Cardiac Sonography

RDCS credential pathways for cardiac specialties

  1. 1975

    ARDMS incorporated: ARDMS states it has been incorporated since 1975 and awards sonography credentials worldwide.

  2. 2015

    MSK ultrasound assessments expanded: ARDMS notes that ARDMS expanded MSK ultrasound assessments, reflected in the RMSKS credential.

  3. 2017-01-01

    RVT credentialing requirement for IAC vascular labs: ARDMS states all technical staff in IAC-accredited vascular labs must obtain RVT to keep IAC accreditation.

  4. 2019-02-12

    RMSKS/MSK ANSI accreditation approval: MSKS credentialing programs were approved by ANSI under ISO 17024 on this date.

  5. 2021

    RMSKS windows and schedule support: RMSKS page publishes application and exam windows and indicates windowed administration at Pearson test centers.

  6. 2022

    SPI practice analysis refresh: The SPI exam references a current SPI Practice Analysis published in 2022 (replacing earlier JTA naming).

  7. 2024

    Major specialty practice-analysis updates: AED, FE, and PE examinations list updated practice-analysis releases in 2024.

  8. 2024

    Additional specialty analyses concluded: OB/GYN and Pediatric Sonography pages list Practice Analysis conclusions in 2021; FE/PE/AE activity continues through 2024 updates.

  9. 2025-04-25

    AE content-outline transition: ARDMS provides separate AE content outlines for exams delivered before and after April 25, 2025.

    Annual SKILLS quizzes now required for ARDMS MOC
