Level 1

Foundation examiner track

  • Accredited Financial ExaminerAFEFoundation designation; four AFE exams plus education, experience, and General Member standing.

Level 2

Financial examiner track

  • Certified Financial ExaminerCFEAdvanced designation; AFE prerequisite and four CFE exams.
  • Certified Financial Examiner - Financial AnalystCFE-AAnalyst track on the same CFE exam set; marked with (A).

Level 3

Information technology track

  • Automated Examination SpecialistAESIT-specialist designation; AFE1, AFE2, AES Proficiency, and CISA with IT-exam experience.

What changed

The timeline

  1. 1973-06-14

    SOFE founded: A Chicago meeting launched the Society of Financial Examiners to set professional standards for financial examiners.

  2. 1975

    Career Development Seminar starts: SOFE began its annual Career Development Seminar, with the first event held in Kansas City.

  3. 1978-06

    NAIC recognizes SOFE: The NAIC approved SOFE as the accreditation and certification body for financial condition examiners, with training and testing procedures to be developed by SOFE and the Griffith Foundation.

  4. 1987-07

    CRE program begins: SOFE's continuing required education program started in July 1987 and later became mandatory on January 1, 1991.

  5. 1993-10

    AES launches: SOFE launched the Automated Examiner Specialist program, and a bachelor's degree became required for all designations effective July 1994.

  6. 1998-12

    SOFE website launches: SOFE established its website in December 1998.

  7. 2004

    Online testing begins: SOFE introduced online testing and an electronic Insight in 2004.

  8. 2006

    Analyst discipline introduced: SOFE implemented the Insurance Financial Rating Analyst discipline and awarded the first designation to Sean Duke in Alabama.

  9. 2007

    CRE reading program implemented: SOFE added the CRE reading program to its continuing education framework.

  10. 2009

    Legacy banking designations retired: SOFE discontinued designation programs for banks, credit unions, and financial institutions.

  11. 2024-06-14

    Testing oath adopted: The SOFE Executive Committee adopted the Oath Regarding Tests and Examinations to reinforce testing integrity and confidentiality.

  12. January 1, 2026

    SOFE CRE cycle rolls to 2026-2028
